Basil Stewart is a
Canadian politician and is the
mayor of
Summerside, Prince Edward Island. He has been in office since 1985.
Before mayorship
Before his stint as Mayor of Summerside, Basil Stewart was a
police officer for the Summerside Police Departement from 1971 to 1984, when he retired from the force.
Mayorship
After his retirement from the police force, Stewart decided to run at the
1985 municipal elections to become mayor of Summerside, Prince Edward Island. He didn't only run for mayor, but also won, and has been winning ever since. Stewart has been re-elected in 1988 and 1991, then he won again in
1994 and became the first mayor of the now City of Summerside (Summerside formely being a town). And he'd again be re-elected at the following municipal elections in
1997,
2000,
2003 and
2006.
Goals and Objectives
Stewart has many goals and objectives to make Summerside a better to place to work, live, and raise a family. Also, another big goal is to enhance the economic development of the city.
Committees
Stewart isn't only the mayor of Summerside, but is also on many committees. He is presently a representative of the National Board of the Federation of the Canadian Municipalities,
Federation of Prince Edward Island Municipalities, and National Board of Directors to Sustainable Municipal Infrastructure. In the past, he was also apart of Chair of Atlantic Caucus
1998 and Chair of National Economic Development Committee from
1998-
2000.
Family and Interests
Stewart lives in Summerside with his wife Gail Inman-Stewart. He has two children — Mary-Jane (Steve Dyer) and Major (Holly). Basil also has three granddaughters — Mia Stewart and Amber and Emma Dyer.
His interests include
hockey,
swimming, and
music (he plays
guitar,
harmonica,
fiddle, and
mandolin).
